Creative Background

John commenced painting professionally in 1978 and has exhibited regularly in Auckland, Warkworth, Whangarei, Hamilton, Napier and Christchurch galleries over the years and his work has sold widely in both New Zealand and overseas.
He conducts teaching workshops and demonstrations for various Auckland Region Art Groups, is an approved Art tutor for the NZ Adult Education Board, past tutor for Adult Art Classes at Edgewater College and has judged many Auckland Art Festivals and Exhibitions. He is a past President of the Howick Art Group and a member of the NZ Fellowship of Artists and Mairangi Arts Centre.
John specialises in Commission work for Corporate and Private Clients and he has been a recipient of numerous Art Awards from the Australian Artist, NZ Fellowship of Artist , Franklin Arts Festival, Auckland Easter Show, Howick Art Group 
His work is mainly in oils, specialising in North and South Island landscapes, Marine and City scenes depicted in an artistic representational style. The utilisation of warm and cool colour combinations produces a realistic lighting effect in his paintings.
John teaches both beginners and more advanced students, helping them understand the use of colour and colour mixing, the use of tonal contracts to strengthen their work and development of their individual style and confidence to tackle a variety of subject.

Teaching Philosophy

His philosophy is that everyone with the right tuition can learn to paint and draw satisfactorily, however there are few shortcuts and application and dedication is really important.
He works from his studio and gallery at Whitford, Nr Howick.
