About Us - Seung-Ja Yu

Creative Background

I was born and brought up in Seoul, Korea where I learned the art of oriental brush calligraphy from contemporary masters in the early 1960s. My interests included both Chinese and Korean callligraphy. Since settliing in Auckland with my family in 1993, I have continued to practise callligraphy, eventually becoming a calligraphy teacher. I have been teaching adult Korean and Taiwanese students since October, 2006.
Thanks to my efforts to establish a relationship between the Chinese Calligraphers Association of New Zealand and Korean calligraphers I made possible a joint Callgraphy Exhibition 24 January through 1 February, 2009 at the Northart Gallery.

Chinese characters have over 4000 years of history, but amazingly enough all different styles of charaters are attracting present calligraphers. To be a good calligrapher one should understand those historic elements which is why it is necessary to learn from a professional. I also teach Korean brush calligraphy using Korean charaters, Han-geul. My teaching covers Chinese and Korean characters of different styles and times.

Teaching Philosophy

To enable students to enjoy and be familiar with the graceful oriental culture. To widen students cultural horizons by teaching them an art that acts as a bridge between New Zealand and Asian thinking.
Brush calligraphy will keep your mind more focussed, peaceful and disciplined.
