Students gain confidence in expressing themselves through art and design,
at MAC we introduce students to a variety of art disciplines where they experience
many different processes.

7-10 year olds will expand their creativity by developing their knowledge
and skills in art and design techniques. This class provides a stimulating
and exciting environment of experimentation and innovation.
We will study interesting artists and look and respond to their
work and work to themes that drive creative ideas.Children will cover drawing
from observation, colours and tones, a broad variety of mark making materials
and advanced art, design and craft techniques.
They will also have the opportunity to experiment with many interesting methods
and mediums.

C3: What’s on the Label?

Using Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol as inspiration. We will create a series
of works using mixed media and collage with canned food and packaging as subject
matter. We’ll be taking an in depth look at the elements that make up
the imagery used on our food packaging and deconstructing this to create a
series of works with reference to pop art.

Cartoon imagery is so appealing with confident use of line and vivid colours.
These images enthral many. Taking inspiration from manga and graphic images
as well as current cartoon characters from the TV, we’ll be exploring
ways of depicting the figure and face with a graphic interpretation. Students
will be making a series of works that tell a story from their own unique viewpoint.

C5: Creative Art Class

For the older student who loves to be creative and adventurous in the art
studio, Emma is offering a fabulous, fun class! This class covers skills such
as paper making, wire sculpture, marbling and mosaics. These hands on, creative
projects allow children to have fun developing their 3D and spatial abilities
resulting in some very special artwork.

Come and work with this experienced Tutor to design and paint a large mural
on the exterior wall at the Arts Centre.
This is a brand new class that involves planning, sketching design and colour
work. Students will work together as a team to transfer these ideas onto existing
walls resulting in an artwork enjoyed by the many visitors we have to the
Centre.

Enjoy being creative with clay and shape an animal of your choice, which is
not living on our planet any longer or belongs to an endangered species. Taking
a playful approach children will hand build their creatures using, clay learning
processes and techniques on the way. They will then decorate their figures
with colourful slips. Pottery wheels are availabe for students to enjoy and
learn the process of throwing pots.

C8: NZ Artists Up Close: Kids Art Class

In this fun and educational course for children aged 7 - 10 we will look at
the work of a diverse range of some of New Zealand’s most influential
artists. Each week the children will be introduced to the unique style and
materials of colourful contemporary artists like Reuben Patterson, Saskia
Leek and Judy Darragh. The children will then be supported to create their
own work using similar materials and processes. The children will paint with
glitter,create new images by painting over the top of op shop framed paintings
and build assemblages from found objects.
This course provides a space for children to think outside the box by exploring
less traditional processes and materials at the same time as teaching them
about NZ artists.
