Helen Reid is an enthusiastic tutor who has taught for many years as a senior-teacher at Torbay Primary School, and as an art specialist at Saint Kentigern School in Remuera.
Helen enjoys all forms of creativity. Photography is pursued with a passion, with many pictures focusing on unusual angles or lighting or small, often unnoticed, details. She has written stories for children, and published a series of educational books for use in the classroom. After a walking tour of the Greek Islands, she redesigned the old wooden house her family had acquired so that it resembled a Greek, cottage. With its sheltered courtyards and raised garden beds. Helen and her family can now enjoy a Mediterranean style of living In the East Coast Bays.
The importance of children experiencing a full range of media is paramount in Helen's teaching. A child may be good at drawing, for example, but lack skills in painting, or have an instinctive understanding of colour while finding cutting and pasting difficult
While not concentrating on one form of art exclusively, all aspects are dealt with
in depth. Drawing with pencil, charcoal or ink, painting using sponge or brush with acrylic paint, using oil pastels and dye, cutting and pasting designs, fabric- painting, print-making and collage are all covered over a year's tuition.
Helen has been taking classes at Mairangi Arts Centre for several years and caters
for children in the 6-10 and 10-14 year old age groups.
