I create paintings that I hope people will enjoy. As there is much trouble in today’s world, I feel we need to sometimes focus on what is pure and beautiful. I paint to raise the spirits of the viewer as I celebrate beauty at every opportunity and delight in bringing it to the people. That is the joy of it.
To me painting is about the use of light regardless of the subject matter. In my oil paintings I apply the dark colours first and work towards the lighter tones, this creates contrast and perspective. I am intrigued by the way a flower is illuminated when backlit by the sun, or how any subject can be transformed by the light. I am aware that colour creates the mood and evokes an emotional response in the viewer. I continually try to loosen and improve my style and take my subjects beyond simply representing what I see, leaving the viewer to add the detail in their own minds.
I’ve travelled worldwide and worked in many mediums from miniatures to murals; however I still prefer to paint the flowers and landscapes of rural Southland and Otago which for the greater part of my life was my home.
